Oxalis

Oxalis Care Guide

Light

Oxalis prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some morning or evening direct sunlight, but intense afternoon sun can scorch its leaves. Rotate the plant occasionally to promote even growth and prevent it from leaning towards the light source.

Water

Water the Oxalis when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure thorough watering, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. During the plant's dormancy period, usually in winter, reduce watering and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Humidity

Maintain moderate humidity levels, ideally between 40-50%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to increase humidity around the plant.

Temperature

Keep the Oxalis in a moderately warm environment with temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). It can tolerate cooler temperatures during its dormancy period.

Fertilizer

Feed the Oxalis with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize during the plant's dormancy period.

Toxicity

Some varieties of Oxalis contain oxalic acid, which can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. It is best to keep the plant out of reach of pets and children and to handle it with care to avoid skin irritation.

Additional Care Information

Use a well-draining potting mix to ensure proper drainage and prevent waterlogging. The Oxalis may go dormant during the winter months, with leaves dying back. Reduce watering and allow the plant to rest during this period. New growth should appear in spring. Propagate the Oxalis by dividing the rhizomes or planting bulbils produced by the plant.

Troubleshooting

Leaf Dropping: Leaf dropping can be a sign of overwatering, underwatering, or stress due to temperature fluctuations. Check the soil moisture and adjust your care routine accordingly. Yellow Leaves: Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, underwatering, or nutrient deficiencies. Ensure proper watering and fertilization. Pest Infestation: Oxalis can be susceptible to pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Regularly inspect the plant for signs of pests and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
